The Main Elements of an Advanced Thermal Technology Energy
Plant
Waste Reception, Handling and
Pre-treatment
The pyrolysis and gasification process is focused on treating
the organic based materials present in MSW (e.g. paper,
plastics, card, putrescible waste, green waste).
Therefore, non combustible materials and recyclables,
(typically metals and glass) may be removed prior to the
thermal treatment reactor stage. In addition and depending on
the technology employed, the feed material might require
processing to remove excess moisture, and shredding to reduce
the size.
It is the preference (for most ATT processes) to treat only
pre-processed MSW that makes these systems appropriate to be
integrated into a wider municipal waste management
strategy.
ATT processes may for example be used in conjunction with
sorting technologies such as those employed in Mechanical
Biological Treatment plant.
Some MBT plant are designed to produce a fuel stream (primarily
composed of paper, card and plastics) as one of the outputs
from the process. This is commonly referred to as refuse
derived fuel or RDF.
This may be more amenable to processing in an ATT plant rather
than raw MSW.
