IChemE Conference - Gasification 11
The 11th European Gasification Conference
Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy
8 - 11 May 2012
Gasification technology provides an interesting conversion path to fuels and chemicals from a large range
of primary power sources. The majority of the unattractive byproducts made by standard combustion processes
are either eliminated, converted into saleable products, or can be caught for safe storage.
Gasification 11 will take a closer look at the newest developments in the field.
Gasification 11 will take a brief look at the World business and political developments which have
brought the requirement for flexibility and choice of power sources to the head of the agenda, at a time
when lots of the world's electricity production remains reliant on old fashion coal burning.
In the meantime , the options presented by nuclear power and natural gas are still beset by safety, commercial and
geopolitical challenges and on teh other hand, doubts remain re the feasibility of renewables lacking the presence
of a 'smart grid ' environment. Gasification 11 will supply a chance to open out the issues about
these problems. Issues that need to be formulated and resolved fast to avoid approaching energy supply problems
predicted by many.
Normal coal power generation continues to get bad P. R. in several developed economies and future
public acknowledgment depends heavily on the early deployment of carbon-dioxide capture and
storage.
Similar concerns are developing around natural gas. Simultaneously, the macro potential of biomass feedstocks
is being inspected but a discovery might be some way off. However , buyers and officeholders continue to demand
trusty, stable and abundant electricity supplies.
The meeting will show how gasification can meet these challenges.
The organisers of Gasification II are happy to announce the meeting will happen close to Sarlux, the
planet's biggest Integrated Gasification Mixed Cycle ( IGCC ) facility. Sarlux is found at the Saras refinery
in Sardinia, Italy. With over 10 years successful commercial operation, Sarlux delivers an output of 550 MW for
grid supply and high pressure hydrogen for the refinery. A non compulsory site visit will be included as a part
of the program.
Additionally, Sardinia is a fascinating visitor destination and representatives will have the chance to experience
the old town of Cagliari and enjoy one of Italy's most green towns in addition to the traditional sites to the west
of the Saras refinery gathered around Nora, the 1st city in Sardinia.
Technical program
Today, new investment in energy conversion is made difficult by the volatility of raw material availability and
price, and the necessity to meet tighter environmental regulation. Most challenging of all is the rocketing
pressure to regulate C02 emissions.
Gasification could be the key to conquering these problems and the meeting program will
demonstrate that:
- Gasification is utilized in the extraction and processing of formerly untouched tar sands and is being developed
to access shale oils and deep coal measures.
- Gasification offers routes to top quality products from low grade of power sources.
- Gasification is a major step in changing coal to exchange natural gas ( SNG ) and cleaner transport fuels,
including aviation fuels.
- Continued R&D is required, both to evaluate information being acquired from existing gasification projects
and to spot further chances for cost reduction, improved potency and scope for further process invention.
Exhibition area and poster display
A large networking space has been set aside for exhibition stands. Refreshments will be served in this area,
which will also include poster presentations, thereby guaranteeing a strong delegate interaction.
In a new development for 2012, universities will be invited to accept a reduced rate for an organisation stand
to showcase their facilities and research scope in the field of gasificaion.
Typical areas of interest are:
- New construction materials, particularly for application in reducing conditions
- Syngas combustion
- Refractory materials
- Particulate removal
- Selective acid gas removal
- Liquid effluent treatment
- Captured C02 treatment
Who should attend?
